Agenda:
Dalton Beautification Commission
2 MAY 2019

1.Secretary’s report
2. Treasurer’s report
3.Evaluate in-ground garden spaces: medians,707 and South Street. Rosebush wrap removal if needed. Consider need for any rosebush replacement. Cultivate medians; begin pre planting activities: trenching, soil refreshment/replacement where required. When…dates/times? Holiday Farm bedding soil, additional top dressing and/or Wahconah pre bagged. Obtain prices from vendors for soil.
4.In ground garden design/ ideas for season 2019. Last year's plant order could be used as a guide, but any agreed upon changes are welcome. Numbers of plants…Fewer/more? Create a planting template, drawing or sketch, especially for the large triangular spaces, so volunteers have a copy and are organized when planting time arrives. Same design for both areas?
5. Prices for annuals from Blossoming Acres “up slightly” due to increase in minimum wage. Lenita suggests that we let her know numbers so our plant selections can be assured. Farmer’s Market at Mall begins Saturday 4 May and will continue each Saturday and Wednesday 8AM to 1PM throughout the season. As in the past, Jaeschke’s 10% discount. Whitney’s does not offer a discount under $500.00.
6. 707 site is difficult as vehicular traffic wanders onto planting spaces at times. Should we continue another year? It is a beautiful space when in bloom. Pedestrian comments, as well as community at large, really enjoy this area. Hardy pansies in bloom would bring early color to announce spring’s arrival and show this space as a garden. Each flat has # 36 plants @ about $15.00 per Lenita. Soil refreshment? Soil via Holiday Farm bucket brigade?
7. Planters at library. Coleus? Plant design. When to plant? Early return of library planters from Highway Dept., bridge baskets later? Bridge baskets…plant design preference. Estimate need for new potting soil, then order from L.P. Adams. Amount? Cable ties: number/length? Plant food. Assume an L.P. donation, as in past, or offer payment? 8. Probable dates for shopping, ordering, picking up plants. Firm dates closer to good planting weather.
9. Preparation of DBC areas is a big operation. Should pace ourselves, meeting several times at sites in advance, so work doesn’t seem overwhelming. Planting will be more enjoyable. Weekly maintenance schedule, once planting is complete, same or change?
10. Maureen would like to try something different in the library baskets. Maybe a Fountain Grass, and something with color, Bagonia, Lobelia, or Impatients along with a colorful Coleus.
