Location:Town Hall Callahan Room
462 Main Street, Dalton, MA 01226
Agenda:
DALTON BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
AGENDA
           7 MAY 2015
1.	Secretary’s report.
2.	Should the evaluation of DBC sites precede planning garden design/ordering materials? Possible date to consider medians and 707 site, after the harsh winter? Handout 2014’s plant order. Changes? In fall 2014, Peter suggested red salvia, rather than blue [or mix] for South Street mini-garden. Other?
3.	Enrichment of soil at the Wahconah site was suggested, particularly the east corner. Also, trenching around the medians was a huge success, aiding planting symmetry and water retention. Doing trenching prior to planting would make plant placement easier. If agreeable, date/time?
4.	Pansies at 707 site brought early color, giving a nice preview to spring 2014. Also, consider removal of old rose bushes, which appear overbearing to the space [and roots infiltrate] replacing with 4 0r 5 “Knock Out” rose bushes. Town Highway is agreeable to remove old plants. We could pop in new plants when removing the old. Garden maintenance there would be easier as well.
5.	Purchase Miracle Grow time release granules for application when planting? Or MG application when trenching, to allow absorption prior to planting?
6.	Prices from Blossoming Acres: “the same or not much more”.
7.	CRA gardens: Perhaps the two garden spaces flanking the walkway might better blend with the new design fronting the building if edges were more rounded, reflecting the landscaping installed spring 2014? Would the same theme of perennials in these gardens spaces be more consistent with the overall design? If agreed, CRA could have their landscaper make any changes.
8.	Bridge Baskets: Should we forgo this year, due to the Memorial Bridge’s deteriorated condition? Perhaps the absence of baskets will pressure the State to act on much needed repairs. I called the MA Highway Dept on 7 April 2015, as I did last year, to alert them of the DBC’s concerns of safety and appearance.
9.	This year, I am going to be very busy with selling our home [hopefully] and moving. We will continue to live in Dalton, and expect to remain as a regular DBC member. However, I will be unable to devote as much time to the DBC’s work. A new chairperson would be a helpful change. Additionally, the DBC needs more hands-on-helpers, to make our efforts less demanding. Ideas?
10.	The Dalton Town Government is moving to a new website at mytowngovernment/01226. The DBC business meetings for April, September, October and November 2015 are listed, unfortunately, beginning with November, working back to April. Barbara Surnier helped me with this new system. Currently Barbara is on vacation, but will be back in her office on 22 April.
11.	Consider usual weekly work schedule, or changes?
12.	Other.
